Vintage Hanging C Forschners Balance No 2 Scale
New York Patent Jan 29 1900
This small portable scale can be hung up by the ring at the top. A spring mechanism allows the pointer to slide down the dial when something is hung on the hook protruding from the base. Capacity is 50 pounds (we have not tried to gauge the accuracy of the scale, but the pointer does move when tension is applied to the hook).
The patent date is Jan 29, 1900. There is a small rust spot near the bottom of the dial, but otherwise it is in good shape, with just the normal signs of age. The front looks like it might have been shiny originally (brass colored?). Now it has a dark cast to it. The back looks like it might have been painted black, but now is a mottled black/silver color with some tinges of rust. It was used on the farm where my husband grew up. As far as he can remember they "always had it." My husband qualifies as an antique, so maybe the scale does, too!
