Vintage GE Radio
Long before transistors, the table-top radio was a fixture in the American home. People gathered around to hear news reports and shows like "Martha Bohlson's Kitchen" or "Fibber McGee and Molly."My mother remembers the first radio they had. When the family had proudly installed it and gathered around to listen to the "talking box," an old aunt who was still not quite used to the telephone asked, "Can you talk back to it?" Maybe there are times we have talked back to it, especially with today's talk shows, but it doesn't listen !
This radio is undated, but appears to be a Model 221. A helpful contact told us by email that he has one like it, and he identified it for us as a Model GE 221 from 1946. We thought it was from the 1940's, so this would go along with our knowledge.
It has the old vacuum tubes. The case is quite nice, but we haven't tried to fix it and as far as we know it does not work (we got as far as getting a book on how to fix old radios, and no farther). Other notations on the label mention "Superheterodyne 455 KC 1.F", "Range 540-1600 Kilocycles" and "6-10 Megacycles". The front dial has two scales, one "Standard Kilocycles" and one "Shortwave Megacycles".
