1940's Vintage Wards Airline Model 04WG-731 Radio With Manual
This is a Model 04WG-731 Montgomery Ward Airline table model radio, produced no later than April 1941 according to information we obtained from the interesting historical radio Web site nostalgiaair.org. The back page of the manual has the notation "W G & C Series 7D5-1 -- Issue 'B' 10-40" from which we are guessing the manual was revised in October of 1940.
The case shows some wear and tear, but is in surprisingly good shape considering the radio's age and the fact that it hasn't been used for at least 40 years. See abrasions on the top as shown below.
We haven't attempted to clean it up, but the speaker cloth appears to be in excellent shape, with only one small dark spot about an inch long, and the rest of the radio would hopefully be easier to work with than the cloth.
The dial area indicates that the radio receives either Short Wave or Broadcast frequencies. When we plug it in (the old-fashioned 2-prong cord, no grounding), we get a loud hum, but no station. The Tuning dial turns freely without seeming to change the frequency, so we suspect that this is the problem. We have not tried to have it fixed.
